This weekend course is suitable for all former students of Waterside who have completed Module 2 and runs over a 2-day period. The new course is an excellent next step in further developing ones forging skills with a focus on tool making and heat treatment. The course will provide an overview on carbon/alloy steels, heat-treatment processes and metallurgy. With this new gained knowledge, students will forge their own hammer, centre punch, chisel and a pair of tongs using alloy steels. The forging processes will include striking, punching and drifting, drawing out of tool steel while learning about the layout and ergonomics of anvil navigation. Tasmanian based Pete Mattila, will be teaching with the assistance of the familiar Waterside crew. Pete was originally trained as an industrial blacksmith and welder who went on to complete a Bachelor and Masters degree in Fine Arts. His work celebrates complex histories, in art, craft and design as well as industrial expression. Pete has extensive experience teaching and working in the US and Australia.
